Kishore came early from school and had his father as usual resting in his bed. Peeping into the room the boy said giggling:
"Daddy! Today you also came early from your office?"
Sadashiva Panicker did not bother either greeting his son from school or answering his wicked question. He remained reclining in his bed his back pressed on the raised pillow kept against the wall on the head side of the cot and his feet dangling out almost touching the floor. He had in his hand the latest railway time-table, which he seemed reading from the cover to cover. Though Panicker appeared unmoved, his mind was on its journey discovering the way to preventing Kishore from further damaging the joy of the unexpected gift of half day because of his colleague's sudden death! He hadn't found earlier any such quick and sweet benefits of human demise.
"Daddy!"
When he returned from his sweet reverie Panicker saw the demon again standing before his eyes.
"Now what?"
Panicker's voice sounded like the musical noise from a broken guitar.
Sitting in the bed by his father's side Kishore pulled the trigger.
"What do you mean by making love? Miss was not explaing it in the class properly!"
Panicker's eye-balls popped out from their sockets. He put his little finger in his right ear as if to stir clean the vexing wax sticking to the inner walls and pretended deaf for a moment.
"Daddy..!"
The rising pitch of the boy's cry frightened the father lest the mother should be attracted by the noise. Smiling defeatedly Panicker pinched the cheek of his son and tried:
"Making love means...!"
"Means?"
Kishore's impatient voice brought Parvati to the room but incredibly without the knowledge of his father. It was because the father ever barely opened his eyes while replying to his son.
Standing by the side of the wardrobe in the room Parvati was suspiciously watching the foolish smile taking shape on her husband's unsure lips.
"Making love means..!"
When he again repeated the same meaningless words Parvati couldn't keep her under control. She raised her voice like a mad woman and quipped:
"Tell me too! What do you know about making love?" Close
